And in today’s episode we are going to be discussing the phra has 7 different meanings… For the first 5 meanings, the phrasal verb is separable. Meaning it can be separated by an object. To pick up something OR, to pick something up.
1. To lift or gather
The baby dropped the spoon on the floor, so the mother had to pick it up.
Please pick up the book and open it.
2. To collect
Please can you pick John up from school today, I won’t be able to make it on time.
The taxi driver will pick up the customer from the airport.
3. To answer the phone
I’ll pick up the phone when he calls.
Every time I pick up the phone, she puts it down.
4. To detect or perceive
The microphone picked up some background noise.
Dogs have a great ability to pick up smells that humans can't detect.
5. To learn
I easily picked up German when I spent a year there.
I want to pick up a new skill this year.
6. To flirt with someone
He tried to pick the girl up at the party by buying her a drink.
Bars are good for picking up guys.
